Why do articles with local physical holdings only appear in search results when "expand my results" is turned on?

Answer

CDI currently calculates availability based on the institution's electronic holdings, not physical holdings. The institutional holdings file that is published to CDI contains all of the active collection and portfolio metadata, but no information on physical items. When electronic holdings are also available, the physical holdings will display for that article record in the regular search results. Ex Libris recommends pursuing the functionality of physical availability calculated by CDI via the idea exchange. There is already an existing idea for this functionality:
